UCLA made it official Monday, hiring Philip Mathews as an assistant basketball coach.

Mathews spent the last four years as an assistant at Nebraska and brings a wealth of experience to the job. He was the head coach at the University San Francisco for nine seasons. He replaces Donny Daniels, who was hired to Gonzaga.

The hiring of Mathews gets the Bruins in on the ground floor on recruiting Jordan Mathews, his son and a 6-foot-2 talented shooting guard at Riverside North. He will be a sophomore in the fall.
