Golden Boy Promotions Chief Executive Richard Schaefer said he’s working on striking a deal between his junior-welterweight fighters Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz for a July 10 rematch at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Marquez stopped Diaz in the ninth round of their February 2009 fight in Houston that was voted fight of the year by the Boxing Writers’ Assn. of America.

In September, Marquez suffered a one-sided loss by decision to unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr., and it’s been unclear when or if he would fight again.

Diaz (35-3, 17 KOs) lost three of his last five bouts, including a December unanimous decision to Paulie Malignaggi in a WBO title fight in Chicago that came four months after Diaz won a suspect unanimous decision over Malignaggi in Texas.

The Marquez-Diaz rematch is being negotiated as an HBO pay-per-view event, Schaefer said.
