USC Coach Lane Kiffin announced that veteran Fresno State assistant John Baxter has been hired as the Trojans’ special teams coordinator.

Baxter, 46, coached at Fresno State for 13 seasons, handling special teams, tight ends and receivers.

From 2002 to 2009, Fresno State blocked 49 kicks.

Baxter has also coached at his alma mater, Loras College in Iowa; Iowa State, Arizona, Maine, Maryland and Tulane.

“Hiring John Baxter is something that I thought could probably never happen, so this is a great day for USC,” Kiffin said in a statement. “Having him here will be huge for our team on and off the field. He put together a 13-year run of special teams at Fresno State that were better than any in the country. We’re very excited to welcome him to the Trojan Family.”
