USC men’s basketball Coach Kevin O’Neill announced Friday that he was promoting the team’s strength and conditioning coach Tony Miller to an assistant coaching position.

‘I’ve known Tony for 20 years and feel he’ll do a great job in every aspect for our program,’ O’Neill said in a statement. ‘He was a great player for me at Marquette and will be a great coach for us at USC.’

Miller, who joined USC’s staff this past season, starred as point guard at Marquette for four seasons (1991-95), the first three under O’Neill.

Miller led the Golden Eagles to the NCAA Tournament two times, including a Sweet 16 run in 1994. He ranks seventh all-time among Division I players in career assists with 956. He played professionally in Europe for 12 years after college.

His promotion helps fill a gap on the coaching staff after O’Neill fired two assistant coaches -- Gib Arnold and Phil Johnson -- shortly after this season ended. It is expected that O’Neill will hire one more replacement, probably from outside the program, next month.
