Some notes from the Kings’ skate at Dallas, with more to come as soon as I can transcribe some interviews...

Jonathan Bernier will start in goal tonight in place of Jonathan Quick, whose wife, Jaclyn, gave birth to 7-pound, 9-ounce daughter, Madison Mychal, at 4:15 a.m. Friday in Los Angeles.

Bernier arrived in Dallas Thursday night without his suitcase but with his equipment, and if he had to do without one of them, the suitcase was more expendable. Coach Terry Murray had said Thursday that he was leaning toward starting Bernier against the Stars and affirmed that Friday.

‘I want to see him. I think he has played very well this year in Manchester and he’s very deserving of the opportunity,’ Murray said. ‘When you move by another goaltender, [Erik] Ersberg in this situation, it’s not to be viewed as a, ‘Well, I can win with one and not the other’ kind of an attitude. That was something I was concerned about yesterday. I thought about it. I talked with Ersberg after the skate here and explained my reasoning.’

Murray also said it hadn’t been decided whether Bernier will return to Los Angeles with the team after tonight’s game or return to Manchester of the American Hockey League. It would make sense to keep Bernier around until the Kings are sure that Quick is able and prepared to play Sunday afternoon at home against Nashville.

Also, the Kings activated right wing Justin Williams from injured reserve and he will play for the first time since he broke his right ankle on Dec. 26. He will be back with his old linemates on what was the team’s best line early this season, left wing Ryan Smyth and center Anze Kopitar.

With Williams returning, winger Raitis Ivanans will come out of the lineup.
