When Angels traveling secretary Tom Taylor phoned Troy Percival about the former closer’s stint as a spring-training guest instructor this week, he asked if the pitcher would need a flight from Southern California to Phoenix.

‘Nope,’ Percival replied.

Taylor then asked Percival if he would need any ground transportation while he was here.

‘Nope,’ Percival said.

The reason for Percival’s responses can be found in the parking lot beyond the right-center field wall in Tempe Diablo Stadium: a 45-foot ‘fifth-wheel’ camping trailer that Pericval hauled from his home in Riverside and is living in during his time with the Angels this week.

‘I’m renting the back room,’ joked Chuck Finley, the former Angel pitcher who is also serving as a guest instructor this week, ‘for $4 a night.’
