Never a dull moment for USC, even when things appear sleepy.

USC’s long day before the NCAA’s infractions committee just got livened up a bit when a hotel alarm sounded.

‘Attention, attention. An emergency has been reported,’ boomed a voice between blasts of an alarm.

All occupants of the conference room, and those of us outside, were told to leave the building. Several officials joked that media members set off the alarm. It made for an interesting scene in the parking lot.

During the break, Coach Lane Kiffin confirmed that he had hired Clay Helton, who was offensive coordinator last season at Memphis and had recently joined the staff at Arkansas State.

Kiffin said Helton would coach quarterbacks.

A few minutes later, the hotel gave the all-clear sign and the various contingents filed back into the conference room to resume the hearing.

I’ll have more later at latimes.com/sports.
