USC had a new goal after its postseason hopes were taken away Sunday.

Win the Pac-10 Conference outright, meaning the next 16 games would essentially be the playoffs.

Good call: The school has never done it before ... and it’s the only option the Trojans have.

But that new campaign got off to a bumpy start Wednesday in Palo Alto as USC had its eight-game winning streak snapped by Stanford, 54-53.

USC’s Leonard Washington banked in a three-pointer to tie the game at 53 with 32 seconds left, but he fouled Stanford’s Jarrett Mann on the next play. Mann made one, and USC failed to score with 10.6 seconds left.

[Update: It was Jarrett Man who was fouled and sank a free throw. Not Landry Fields, as was previously stated.]

It marks USC’s (10-5 overall, 2-1 in Pac-10 play) eighth straight loss at Maples Pavilion.

Dwight Lewis kept the Trojans in the game with 22 points and Alex Stepheson added 13.

Fields, who came into the game ranked second in the Pac-10 in scoring (23.2), had 14 points. Green finished with 17.

Stanford improved to .500 overall (7-7, 1-1) with the win.
