Bob Hester has claimed Hawaii for the state of Texas, at least the college-football-playing part of Texas. Hester, a schoolteacher, has traveled a meandering route from West Texas to Kona, going to Vietnam and Alaska while in the military before settling in Hawaii.

“Hawaii is all burnt orange,” Hester said.

It is if you don’t use sunblock.

But Hester, who was tailgating with relatives at the Rose Bowl, said he was the western-most Longhorn fan at the game, at least among the people he had met.

“They’re not many of us Texas and Cowboy fans out there in Hawaii,” he said.

Hard to believe there aren’t a few Dallas Paniolos in the islands.

As for facing Alabama in the national title game, Hester was lacking in knowledge about Tuscaloosa.

‘All I know is what they won’t be after today, national champs,’ he said.
