Emotions are running high at Arroyo Seco -- and the Rose Bowl game won’t start for several more minutes.

Just before Ohio State, the visiting team, left the field after pregame warmups, its players gathered in a large huddle near midfield and began bounding up and down. Oregon players, perhaps taking that as a challenge, rushed en masse toward midfield where they too held a jumping huddle of their own.

Soon players from both teams were barking at each other. Ohio State coaches could be seen pushing several players back into the team huddle while more than a dozen Rose Bowl officials rushed onto the field and filled the narrowing gap between the teams. The two sides never came into contact.
