Santa Anita cancels today's races because of weather, poor track conditions

Santa Anita has canceled its nine-race card for today because of inclement weather and poor track conditions, track spokesman Mike Willman said.

There had been 11 horses scratched prior to the decision to cancel races. The track's Pro-Ride synthetic surface has been notorious for having draining problems.

"It's just not draining," Willman said.

It's the first time since 2008 that the track has canceled its card because of weather and track conditions.

Racing is scheduled to resume on Thursday but that card also could be in jeopardy because of predictions of continuing rain this week. The San Marcos Handicap, which was scheduled to be run today, will be run on Sunday.
