Ben Sheets proves he still can throw a fastball

Ben sheets1 Ben Sheets, the right-hander who missed all of last season because of elbow surgery, pitched in front of more than two dozen scouts from a number of teams -- including the Dodgers -- at the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Tuesday.

In an interview on MLB Network, the 31-year-old veteran said he felt good throwing. "I had to come out here and prove my health," he said.

Sheets has a record of 86-83 with a 3.72 earned-run average over eight seasons and is believed to be seeking a two-year deal in the range of $10 million to $12 million.

According to several reports, Sheets threw 20 fastballs in the first workout session with the top velocity of 91 mph. The Cubs, Mets and Rangers are among the clubs pursuing him.
