John Daly retiring. Really?

After shooting a 71 Friday at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines (a day after an opening-round 79), John Daly told a producer who is part of a production crew filming Daly’s every move for a new Golf Channel show called, ‘Being John Daly,’ that he was done with golf.

Daly said this in the parking lot on his way out of the tournament (he missed the cut). Even the producer seemed surprised, asking Daly if he weren’t letting down his parents and his fans. Daly said it was because he didn’t deserve to take up spots in a field (he’s using a sponsor exemption here).

But even Daly’s caddy didn’t quite believe him, saying Daly is often negative after bad days at the office.

Coincidentally, Daly’s show is scheduled to begin airing on March 2. Wouldn’t an extra dose of controversy goose ratings? Maybe a little? Especially if Daly ‘unretired’ after a couple of episodes?

Daly, 43, had weight-loss surgery last year and has lost more than 100 pounds, though he still chain smokes. He’s been traveling in a recreational vehicle and still has some of the largest galleries on the PGA Tour.
