Dodgers re-sign Ronnie Belliard

Bell Ronnie Belliard underwent a physical examination this morning to finalize a one-year, $825,000 contract with the Dodgers. Belliard, 34, can earn an additional $250,000 in incentives based on plate appearances.

Belliard was acquired by the Dodgers in a trade from Washington to be a bat off the bench but ended up being their starting second baseman in the postseason. A career .275 hitter over 12 major-league seasons, Belliard batted .351 with five home runs and 17 runs batted in in 24 regular-season games for the Dodgers last season.

Belliard's agent, Dominic Torres, said that Belliard was told he would compete for the starting job at second base with Blake DeWitt and Jamey Carroll.
