USC point guard Mike Gerrity, who in the four games since he became eligible has turned the Trojans from Pac-10 bottom dwellers to possible conference title contenders, was named the Pac-10 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week today.

Gerrity, a Yorba Linda native who started four years ago at Santa Ana Mater Dei, earned tournament MVP honors at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu where he helped lead the Trojans to wins against Western Michigan, St. Mary’s and UNLV.

For the tournament, he averaged 15.7 points, three rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 steals and shot 62% from the floor (18 for 29), including four of six from three-point range. In USC’s 55-51 win over Western Michigan, Gerrity scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half.

Gerrity, a two-time transfer (Pepperdine and Charlotte), became eligible for USC on Dec. 18. The next day, he led the Trojans to a 77-55 upset of No. 9 Tennessee by recording his first career double-double, 12 points and 10 assists.

The Trojans (8-4), who have won six straight, are 4-0 since he joined the lineup, with wins against teams that have a combined 34-7 record.

Gerrity, who is averaging 14.8 points, 4.3 assists and 3.5 rebounds this season, is the second straight Trojan to win player-of-the-week honors. Forward Alex Stepheson earned the honor last week.
