It’s official: Hideki Matsui signs with Angels

The Angels announced this morning that they have agreed to terms with Japanese slugger Hideki Matsui, a two-time All-Star and the 2009 World Series most valuable player for the New York Yankees, on a one-year contract, believed to be for about $6.5 million.

Matsui will be the second Japanese player to appear with the Angels, joining pitcher Shigetoshi Hasegawa, who played for the club from 1997-2001.

Matsui, 35, hit .274 with 28 home runs and 90 runs batted in for the Yankees this past season, and in his seven seasons in New York, he batted .292 with 140 home runs and 597 RBIs, the most homers and RBIs by a Japanese player in major league history.

Matsui will be introduced at an Angel Stadium press conference today at 2 p.m. Owner Arte Moreno, General Manager Tony Reagins and Manager Mike Scioscia are scheduled to attend.
