Phil Nevin, the former Cal State Fullerton third baseman who spent 12 years in the major leagues, including 1998 with the Angels, has been hired by the Detroit Tigers to manage the team’s double-A affiliate in Erie, Pa.

Nevin, a graduate of Placentia El Dorado High School who led Fullerton to the College World Series championship game in 1992, spent last summer managing the Orange County Flyers, an independent-league team that played in Fullerton.
