It appears that free-agent slugger Jason Bay is heading to the New York Mets.

According to an Associated Press source, Bay and the Mets have agreed to a preliminary deal that will be finalized once the three-time all-star completes a physical. It’s reportedly a four-year deal worth $65 million.

Bay, who was part of the three-team trade that sent Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers in July 2008, had 36 home runs and 119 RBIs with the Red Sox last season.

He has averaged 30 home runs and 99 RBIs over the last six seasons and has a .280 career batting average. Bay is considered one of the top free-agent hitters available this offseason.

His anticipated addition to the Mets lineup should help a team that struggled for power in the batter’s box last season en route to a 70-92 record.
