NHRA leaders stay on top after first day of qualifying

Tony Schumacher, Robert Hight and Mike Edwards posted the top times on the first day of qualifying for the National Hot Rod Assn. Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona on Thursday.

Schumacher doubled his lead, from one point to two, in the top fuel standings. Larry Dixon, a Van Nuys High graduate and the second-place driver in the top fuel standings, was the second-fastest qualifier.

Hight padded his lead in the funny car standings. He was the top qualifier and increased his lead to 108 points over Ashley Force Hood, his John Force Racing teammate.

Edwards added a point to his lead over Greg Anderson in the pro stock standings. Edwards had the top qualifying time, followed by Anderson in second.

Karen Stoffer, a graduate of St. Genevieve High School in Sun Valley, was the top qualifier in the pro stock motorcycle division. She is in seventh place in the pro stock motorcycle standings.
