The New York Yankees announced Tuesday afternoon that they will open their division series playoff on Wednesday, meaning the Angels and Red Sox will start their series on Thursday at Angel Stadium.

The Yankees, by virtue of having the best record in the American League, had their choice of opening dates for their series against the winner of today’s Minnesota-Detroit playoff.

By opening on Wednesday, the Yankees not only get an additional day off Thursday -- a boost for their pitching staff -- but they also force the Minnesota-Detroit winner to fly overnight to New York and begin the postseason the same day.

The Angels will play Games 1 and 2 of their series at home beginning at 6:37 PDT. No time for Sunday’s third game in Boston has been announced.

The Dodgers open their National League Division Series on Wednesday against St. Louis at Dodger Stadium at 6:37 p,m., then play Game 2 Thursday at 3:07. The Dodgers then travel to St. Louis for Game 3 Saturday at 5:07 PDT.
