FINAL SCORE: Yankees 4, Angels 1

Sabathia, who struggled greatly in past postseasons, is 2-0 in this one. The Angels, out of character, committed three errors, a postseason record for the team. The best the Angels can say about this one is that after the game, they could finally get out of the cold. Friday’s game marked only the second time this year that no home runs were hit at Yankee Stadium.

Today, weather permitting, the Angels will send Joe Saunders to the mound. The Yankees will start A.J. Burnett.

BOTTOM OF THE EIGHTH INNING (Yankees 4, Angels 1)

Matt Palmer now pitching for the Angels. Cabrera singles to center, then moves to second when Jeter grounds to third, then takes third when Damon grounds to second. Cabrera’s personal journey ends when Teixeira is called out on strikes.

TOP OF THE EIGHTH INNING (Yankees 4, Angels 1)

Aybar hits a comebacker right at Sabathia for an easy out. Figgins, looking for anything, scouring for scraps, remains hitless with a grounder to short. Abreu flies to left. Sabathia, not looking tired at all, walks to the dugout with a three-run lead and an eight-inning four-hitter.

BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH INNING (Yankees 4, Angels 1)

Teixeira grounds to second. Rodriguez strikes out looking. Matsui walks, then moves to second on a wild pitch. Posada walks. Angels pitching coach Mike Butcher heads to the mound for brief strategic discussion with Bulger. Bulger responds by plunking Cano on the left ankle, loading the bases. Most likely, that wasn’t part of the strategic discussion. ‘For a three-run game, this one is not a yawner,’ McCarver notes. No, for Angels fans it feels more like a kick to the stomach. Swisher eases the pain by striking out to end the threat.

TOP OF THE SEVENTH INNING (Yankees 4, Angels 1)

Rivera strikes out. With one out in the seventh inning, Sabathia issues his first walk of the night, to Morales. Kendrick hits a sharp grounder to the right side of the infield. Cano makes a diving stop, regains his footing and fires to first for the out, Morales moving to second. Mike Napoli hits for Mathis. Napoli strikes out swinging.

BOTTOM OF THE SIXTH INNING (Yankees 4, Angels 1)

Cano flies to deep right. Swisher strikes out. Lackey still blowing into his right hand in between pitches, trying to get some temporary warmth. Cabrera walks. Lackey tries to pick him off and fires the ball behind Cabrera and past first baseman Morales. Error, Lackey. Cabrera advances to second. Jeter follows with a single to center -- routine, it appears, until the ball bounces off the heel of Hunter’s ball and ricochets past him for another error. Cabrera scores on the play, Jeter moves to second. The usually defensively sound Angels have committed three errors in less than six innings. They really look uncomfortable in the cold. Jason Bulger replaces Lackey as the Angels pitcher. Damon flies to left.

TOP OF THE SIXTH INNING (Yankees 3, Angels 1)

With one out, Hunter bunts. Sabathia fields it, turns and makes a throw to first base that appears to pull Teixeira off the bag. At least that’s how Hunter and the Angels see it. Umpire rules Hunter is out, prompting Hunter to hop angrily in the air and Mike Scioscia to leave the dugout to make a long and loud protest. Replays are murky, but you can argue the Angels’ point. In the end, it only amounts to another Angel out. Guerrero ends the inning with a strikeout.

BOTTOM OF THE FIFTH INNING (Yankees 3, Angels 1)

Damon leads off with a double to left center. Teixeira strikes out on a big curveball in the dirt. Pitching cautiously, Lackey walks Rodriguez. Matsui drives the ball into left-center. Rivera, trying to cut the ball off, slips on the wet grass as he lunges for the ball. This is important, because it prompts Rodriguez to run through a stop sign and sprint for home. Aybar catches Rivera’s throw and fires home. Mathis is there, fielding the throw and impersonating a wall protecting home plate. Rodriguez thrusts his shoulder into Mathis. Both players go tumbling. After the collision, Mathis holds the ball aloft and Rodriguez is called out. A has-to-hurt play by Mathis. Before the collision, Damon scored. After the collision Posada grounds to short.

TOP OF THE FIFTH INNING (Yankees 2, Angels 1)

Mathis grounds to first. Aybar grounds to third. Time for the top of the order, which means Figgins, who lugs a postseason 0-for-14 to the plate with him. Buck says Figgins needs to figure it out, and fast. Not so fast -- Figgins makes it 0-for-15 with a grounder to short.

BOTTOM OF THE FOURTH INNING (Yankees 2, Angels 1)

Posada grounds to short. Cano pops to short. Swisher singles to left. Cabrera walks on a full-count pitch. Jeter strikes out on three pitches.

TOP OF THE FOURTH INNING (Yankees 2, Angels 1)

Hunter pops to short. Guerrero hits a deep fly ball to left-center. Guerrero thinks it’s gone and shifts into his home-run trot. While rounding first, he notices the ball bouncing on the turf after striking the top of the fence. Must not have cleared the fence. Guerrero has to hustle to second to beat the throw for a double. Rivera grounds to first, Guerrero taking third on the play. Morales loops a single to left field, scoring Guerrero. Kendrick lines to center.

BOTTOM OF THE THIRD INNING (Yankees 2, Angels 0)

Tim McCarver says the cold weather is adversely affecting Lackey’s curveball. Maybe -- but it’s not hurting him as much as the fielders positioned behind him. Jeter grounds to short. Damon flies to left. Teixeira hits a liner that one-hops the right-field fence for a very long single. Both Joe Buck and McCarver say you can’t hit a ball harder than that. Not true. A ball hit harder than that would be one that lands in the right field seats. Rodriguez singles to center, his sixth hit in four postseason games. Teixeira advances to third on the hit. Matsui hits a sharp grounder to first for the third out.

TOP OF THE THIRD INNING (Yankees 2, Angels 0)

Aybar flies to right. Figgins’ postseason troubles at the plate continue; he strikes out looking. Abreu, former Yankee, pleases the home fans again by striking out.

BOTTOM OF THE SECOND INNING (Yankees 2, Angels 0)

Robinson Cano steps to plate. He’s dressed like he’s ready for duty at Ice Station Zebra. With the lower portion of his hood raised to his nose, Cano flies to center. So does Nick Swisher, dressed with less insulation. Melky Cabrera makes it three-for-three with another fly to center. At least Angels centerfielder Hunter is keeping warm.

TOP OF THE SECOND INNING (Yankees 2, Angels 0)

Juan Rivera grounds to short. Graphic shows a comparison between Teixeira and Kendry Morales, the man who replaced him as Angels first baseman. Home runs and RBI are close, salaries are not. Morales, who makes roughly 10 percent of Teixeira`s annual salary, takes a called third strike. Howie Kendrick hist a routine flare to right field, but Damon appears to lose the ball in the lights. The ball drops in front of Damon for a single. Jeff Mathis grounds to second.

BOTTOM OF THE FIRST INNING (Yankees 2, Angels 0)

Fox camera catches fans with a banner unfurled, reading ‘Captain October.’ We know that’s no reference to Alex Rodriguez. It’s for Yankees captain Derek Jeter, who promptly leads off with a single to right, just beyond a diving Howie Kendrick. Johnny Damon hits a fair ball into the left field corner. Jeter advances third on the hit, Damon takes second on the errant throw by Rivera. Mark Teixeira, an Angel this time last year, flies to mid-range left, not deep enough to score Jeter. Alex Rodriguez is up next and his fly to center field is long enough for Jeter to tag and score. Hideki Matsui hits a harmless pop fly to the left side of the infield. Figgins looks at it. Shortstop Erick Aybar look at it. Neither does anything about it. Ball plops onto the wet grass between them, Damon scoring on the play. Is the cold rattling the Angels? After all, Aybar was wearing a hood beneath his cap. Starting pitcher John Lackey gives both players a glare that could melt ice. Lackey finally ends the inning by getting Jorge Posada to fly to right.

TOP OF THE FIRST INNING (Angels 0, Yankees 0)

How cold is it at game time? Graphic shows it is 45 degrees with intermittent and light rain. That’s the coldest temperature for a game played at the new Yankee Staadium. C.C. Sabathia is the Yankees’ starting pitcher, hoping to keep Angels bats as cool as the weather. Lead-off man Chone Figgins grounds to second. Bobby Abreu is called out on strikes, although Strike 3 looks inside. Umpires need time to warm up, apparently, too. Torii Hunter singles to left. Vladimir Guerrero lines to right.
