Call it incompetence, call it greed, call it what you like.

The fact remains that the potentially decisive World Cup qualifying match between Honduras and the United States on Oct. 10 will not be shown on television in the U.S.

That’s right, it’s not on.

Because the match in San Pedro Sula is a home game for Honduras, it has the broadcast rights, in both English and Spanish. It sold those rights to a third party. That third party failed to get any American broadcaster to fall for its reportedly prohibitive asking price. So closed circuit is all there is.

The U.S. Soccer federation, stating that it ‘would prefer the match be more accessible to fans,’ and realizing their frustration, today released a list of places where the game will be shown. The federation said it will update the list as needed.

Meantime, here are the five--count them, five--English-language sites and here are the 184 Spanish-language locations where fans can see the game. The U.S. will clinch a place in South Africa if it wins, while a Honduran victory would all but secure its place in the 2010 World Cup.
