IOC speaks: Not Chicago or Tokyo

It’s down to Rio de Janeiro or Madrid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. But the International Olympic Committee (IOC) already delivered one shocker, eliminating Chicago in the first round of voting in Copenhagen.

Colleague David Heinzmann, on the ground in Chicago, called it a ‘a stunningly swift defeat for the U.S. bid personally pitched by President Obama.’

Several minutes later, Tokyo was out.

The biggest question: What happened to Chicago’s high-powered bid?

That was difficult to answer, even in this era of instant analysis

Basketball legend Michael Jordan, on CNN, was at a loss too.

‘I’m totally stunned,’ he said. ‘...I’m just as stunned as everybody else....I felt like they did a good job (on the bid). I felt like we were in, without a doubt.’
