BOTTOM OF THE 13TH INNING (Yankees 4, Angels 3)

Jerry Hairston, batting for Guzman, singles to center. Gardner successfully sacrifices, Hairston moving to second. Cano is intentionally walked. Cabrera hits a grounder to second. Izturis has only one play -- throw to first -- but he turns and tries to retire the middle runner at second. Izturis is guilty of trying to do too much. His throw is wild and skitters through the left side on the infield, enabling Hairston to score the winning run. Another Angels mistake leads to a spirit-crushing defeat. Angels fly back to Anaheim down two games to zero.

Aybar hits what should be a routine grounder to Cano at second. But on this muddy track, nothing is routine -- and Cano never gets his glove on it. Despite the sloppy infield conditions, McCarver calls Cano’s error ‘inexplicable.’ Figgins sacrifices successfully, Aybar taking second. Abreu is intentionally walked. Girardi runs out to talk with Robertson, not replace him. Girardi is running out of pitchers. Only one left in what has become a lonely Yankees bullpen. The game has officially crossed the five-hour mark. It is nearly 1 a.m. in New York. The teams have combined to use 13 pitchers who have combined to throw more than 400 pitches. Hunter grounds to short, both runners advancing. Guerrero grounds to second. Angels leave three more men on base -- that’s 16 for the game

BOTTOM OF THE 12TH INNING (Angels 3, Yankees 3)

Ervin Santana now pitching for the Angels. The rain has receded; now it’s down to a drizzle. Cabrera strikes out. Posada hits a flare to right-center for a single. Jeter forces Posada at second. Damon drills a single into right field, Jeter splashes into third base. With Teixeira batting, Damon takes second without a throw. First base is open, but Scioscia decides to pitch to Teixeira with Rodriguez on deck. Santana pitches carefully, eventually walking Teixeira on four pitches. The bases are loaded. For Rodriguez. Listen to the crowd. NOW they cheer him. Rodriguez pops out to center. The Yankees leave the bases loaded.

TOP OF THE 12TH INNING (Angels 3, Yankees 3)

Guerrero leads off by popping out to short. The rain is coming down so hard, Jeter staggers before snaring the slippery baseball. Damaso Marte comes on to pitch for the Yankees. Morales grounds to third. David Robertson replaces Marte, becoming the eighth pitcher used by Girardi tonight. Mathis, a .211 hitter during the regular season, doubles to center. Izturis walks. Matthews strikes out. The Angels leave two more runners on base -- that’s 14 for the game.

BOTTOM OF THE 11TH INNING (Angels 3, Yankees 3)

For the Angels, it’s Brian Fuentes time. As Fuentes warms up, the Yankee Stadium ground crew rakes and sprinkle sand over the muddy pitcher’s mound. It is now officially pouring. Open umbrellas swarm the Yankee Stadium stands. Rodriguez hits a 0-2 pitch down the right-field line that falls just beyond Abreu’s glove, into the first row of the seats. At first, the ball appears to bounce back on the field for a double, triple at worst. But replays show the ball hitting the first row of seats before caroming back into the field of play. Home run, Rodriguez. So far this postseason, Rodriguez is making the Mr. Any Time But October taunts disappear. Guzman strikes out swinging. Gardner grounds out to Fuentes. Cano grounds out to first . . . and we swim on, splashing into the 12th inning.

TOP OF THE 11TH INNING (Angels 3, Yankees 2)

It’s raining harder now. With Rivera having worked 2 1/3 innings, Yankees Manager Joe Girardi hands the ball to Alfredo Aceves. Matthews earns a leadoff walk. Aybar sacrifices, Matthews taking second. Figgins, 0-for-18 this postseason, looks at a high first pitch that is called a strike. Figgins can’t believe it. Neither can anyone wearing red. Aceves gets a quick second strike, then throws a pitch outside. Then, proving nothing lasts forever, Figgins slices a flare that lands on the left field grass. BASEHIT FOR FIGGINS. More than that, Matthews scores on the play. GO-AHEAD RBI FOR FIGGINS. If this score holds, Figgins will be the lead story in many of the nation’s top newspapers. Abreu is intentionally walked. Hunter grounds into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

BOTTOM OF THE 10TH INNING (Angels 2, Yankees 2)

Darren Oliver now pitching for the Angels. Cabrera loops a single to right center field in front of Hunter. It looked like a catchable ball when it was first hit; did Hunter, positioned in deep center, not see it right away? Posada hits a routine double play grounder and the Angels appear to turn it, 4-6-3. Except the second base umpire rules that pivot man Aybar did not touch the base, awarding second base to Cabrera. Replays show Aybar grazed the base as he made his turn. Angels Manager Mike Scioscia comes out to argue, but Cabrera stays at second base. With first base open, the Angels intentionally walk Jeter. Damon pops up to third. Angels believe they should be out of the inning. Oliver gets ahead of Teixeira, 1-2. Teixeira grounds the next pitch to short. Aybar makes the underhand throw to Izturis at second. Izturiz steps on the bag to remove all debate. Oliver pitches out of a situation that used to crush the spirits of old Angels teams.

It’s Rivera versus Guerrero in the 10th inning. Postseason baseball has built its reputation on moments such as this. Guerrero flares a single into right-centerfield. It’s Guerrero’s first hit of the night. Morales forces Guerrero at second. Mathis pops up a bunt attempt, Rivera and Rodriguez nearly crash giving chase, Rivera finally making the catch. Izturis hits a flare to short center; Cano sprints out from second base to make a fine running catch.

BOTTOM OF THE NINTH INNING (Angels 2, Yankees 2)

It’s now raining fairly steadily. Jespen remains in the game. Teixeira opens the bottom of the ninth by grounding out to first. Rodriguez grounds to third. Matsui singles to right and is removed for a pinch-runner, Freddy Guzman. Swisher comes to the plate. Guzman runs on the pitch, which Swisher chops the ball through the left side of the infield for a single. Yankees have runners on first and third with two outs. Cano hits a dribbler in front of home plate. Mathis scoops up the ball and throws to first to end the inning and bring on another

TOP OF THE NINTH INNING (Angels 2, Yankees 2)

Top of the order for the Angels against Rivera. Figgins hits a flare to left, the best chance he’s had for a basehit in a long time, but Damon sprint in to make a tumbling catch. Figgins now 0-for-18 in this postseason. Abreu is called out on strikes. Angels 1-2 hitters are hitless in this ALCS. Hunter is called out on strikes.

BOTTOM OF THE EIGHTH INNING (Angels 2, Yankees 2)

Kevin Jepsen now pitching for the Angels. Jeff Mathis now catching for the Angels. Jorge Posada now batting for the Yankees, pinch-hitting for Molina. Posada grounds to second. Jeter strikes out. Damon grounds to second. Jepsen looks unfazed by the surroundings and the supposed big-game pressure. Angels take a tied score into the ninth inning.

TOP OF THE EIGHTH INNING (Angels 2, Yankees 2)

Phil Hughes on to pitch for the Yankees. Morales and Rivera hit the ball to center, with different results. Morales flies out, Rivera singles. Reggie Willits pinch-runs for Rivera. Izturis hits a routine grounder to short, but Jeter can’t handle it. Error on Jeter, Angels have runners on first and second with one out. Gary Matthews pinch-hits for Napoli. Joe Buck describes Matthews as a ‘high-priced bench warmer.’ Matthews strikes out. That might be the reason Matthews remains a high-priced bench warmer. Mariano Rivera on to pitch for the Yankees. One pitch, one swing by Aybar, ground-out to second to end the inning. That’s why Rivera remains a high-priced bullpen closer.

BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH INNING (Angels 2, Yankees 2)

Swisher singles to left. Brett Gardner pinch-runs for Swisher. Cano grounds into a 4-6-3 double play. That’s three double plays turned by the Angels in the last three innings. Cabrera strikes out.

Napoli flies to right. Cano bobbles a routine grounder Aybar and Aybar is safe on the error. Rather than pulling Cano from the game, Yankees Manager Joe Girardi takes the ball away from Burnett. If Cano had fielded that ball and thrown to first for the out, would Burnett still be in the game -- two out, nobody on? It’s hard to know. Phil Coke is brought on to pitch to Figgins. Coke walks Figgins. It doesn’t end Figgins` hitless streak, but it’s better than nothing. In fact, with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, Figgins has reached base on three consecutive at-bats. Abreu strikes out. Joba Chamberlain on to pitch to Hunter. Hunter works the count to 2-2. That makes it 2-2 with two on, two out in a 2-2 game. One more ball makes the count full. Hunter hits a slow chopper that Jeter fields -- and that’s it. He had no throw to either third or first. Infield single by Hunter. Bases loaded for Guerrero. Molina goes to the mound to talk to Chamberlain. Molina has made more mound appearances during this telecast than Fox has aired ‘Simpsons’ commercials. Once Molina gets back behind the plate, Guerrero strikes out. The Angels leave the bases loaded.

BOTTOM OF THE SIXTH INNING (Angels 2, Yankees 2)

Teixeira reaches first on a throwing error by Figgins. Rodriguez flies to right. Matsui grounds into a 3-6-1 double play.

TOP OF THE SIXTH INNING (Angels 2, Yankees 2) Morales strikes out looking. Rivera flies to right. Izturis flies to center.

BOTTOM OF THE FIFTH INNING (Angels 2, Yankees 2)

The top of the fifth lasted 23 minutes. How will that long a layoff affect Saunders on a cold night? Initial prospects aren’t good. Cabrera singles to left. Molina drives a full-count pitch to right for a single, Cabrera stopping at second. Two on, no outs, Jeter coming to bat. Jeter hits a comebacker to Saunders, who starts a 1-6-3 double play. Cabrera reaches third on the play. Damon strikes out and Saunders gets out of a jam.

Izturis hits a long drive that bounces over the right-field fence for a ground-rule double. Napoli flies to center. Aybar singles up the middle, Izturis scoring. That brings up Figgins with a chance to extend the inning for the Angels` power hitters. Aybar steals second. A single would tie the score. Burnett hits Figgins with a pitch on the left foot. It doesn’t end Figgins’ hitless streak, but it’s better than nothing. Good speed on the bases for the Angels in Aybar and Figgins. Mike Scioscia sends them running three times during Abreu’s at-bat, but Abreu fouls off the pitch each time. On the 10th pitch of the at-bat, Abreu hits another foul ball -- this to the absolute left field corner, Damon catching the ball against the wall and just left of the foul pole. Runners stay put. Hunter walks on a wild pitch that bounds out of play, preventing Aybar from heading home on the play. Bad luck for the Angels. Still, bases are loaded for Guerrero. Burnett uncorks another wild pitch and this time Aybar scores. Tied game. Guerrero grounds to short.

BOTTOM OF THE FOURTH INNING (Yankees 2, Angels 0)

Matsui grounds to first. Swisher grounds to third. Cano flies to center. Saunders has his best inning of the game.

TOP OF THE FOURTH INNING (Yankees 2, Angels 0)

Hunter hits a slow bouncer to Rodriguez, whose hurried throw sends Teixeira diving to catch the ball for the out. This is how Teixeira won multiple Gold Gloves. Guerrero grounds to short on another close play at first. Teixeira is making the left side of the Yankee infield look good. Burnett hits Morales with a pitch. Rivera forces Morales at second.

BOTTOM OF THE THIRD INNING (Yankees 2, Angels 0)

Jose Molina strikes out swinging. Jeter hits one to deep right. Cold or no cold, wind or no wind, that ball is gone for a home run. Damon singles to left. Teixeira forces Damon at second. Rodriguez flies to right.

TOP OF THE THIRD INNING (Yankees 1, Angels 0)

Mike Napoli flies to right. Erick Aybar grounds to short, first baseman Teixeira making a full stretch to pull in the throw. Figgins walks on a full-count. It doesn’t end Figgins’ hitless streak, but it’s better than nothing. With Figgins running on the pitch, Abreu flies to center.

BOTTOM OF THE SECOND INNING (Yankees 1, Angels 0)

Alex Rodriguez lines to short. Hideki Matsui grounds to second. Swisher walks. Robinson Cano drives a hanging breaking ball into the gap in right center. The ball bounds all the way to the wall, enabling Swisher to score all the way from first. Ångels have trouble getting the ball back to the infield, enabling Cano to reach third. The play is generously scored a triple. Melky Cabrera strikes out.

TOP OF THE SECOND INNING (Angels 0, Yankees 0)

Kendry Morales, who drove in the Angels’ lone run in Game 1, looks at strike three. Fox unveils a new gadget called ``Fox Trax Plus’ which measures the speed of the pitch twice -- first when it leaves the pitcher’s hand, then as it reaches home plate. This time, the pitch was 93 mph at point of release and 86 when it hit home plate. Interesting. To a point. Juan Rivera follows that pitch by flying to tight. Maicer Izturis grounds to the pitcher.

BOTTOM OF THE FIRST INNING (Angels 0, Yankees 0)

Joe Saunders, 7-0 since August, makes the start for the Angels. Derek Jeters leads off by grounding to third. Johnny Damon hits a deep drive to right, looking like it has home run potential, but then it loses steam and falls to Abreu on the warning track. This time, the cold weather and swirling wind helps the Angels. Mark Teixeira strikes out.

TOP OF THE FIRST INNING (Angels 0, Yankees 0)

It has rained on and off in New York all day, and getting in nine innings tonight is no sure thing. A.J. Burnett gets the starting pitching assignment for the Yankees. Chone Figgins, 0-for-16 this postseason, leads off for the Angels. He makes it 0-for-17 by striking out on a bad pitch. Bobby Abreu falls behind on the count 0-2 before flying to left. Figgins and Abreu are a combined 0-for-10 so far in this series. Torii Hunter fouls off a pitch, winces as he makes contact. The cold weather is making an impact on the Angels again. Hunter bloops a pitch down the right field that falls in front of right fielder Nick Swisher. By the time Swisher can retrieve the ball and fire it back into the infield, Hunter is at second with a double. Vladimir Guerrero grounds to short.
