As The Times’ Chris Dufresne points out, California’s embarrassing 42-3 loss at Oregon takes some of the sheen off what was expected to be a matchup between the Trojans and a top-5 Golden Bears team this week.

But USC Coach Pete Carroll expects the defeat to only motivate Cal more. “I know that’s as bad as those guys have been knocked in a long time,” Carroll said. “I’m sure, for us, we’ll get the ire of all that.

“They’ll have a great week of preparation to bounce back.”

Middle linebacker Chris Galippo does not anticipate a warm welcome at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley.

“We traveled early to Ohio State and I don’t think any environment can get as hostile as that,” Galippo said. “So the good thing is we know what it’s like.

“But at the same time, it’s conference play so you have to turn it up a notch.”
