Plaxico Burress sentenced to two years in prison

Plaxico

Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress was sentenced to two years in prison today on a weapons-related charge stemming from a incident at a New York nightclub last November. Under court orders, he will be supervised for two years following his release.

He will begin serving his sentence immediately.

Burress, 32, who hopes to play professional football again once his sentence is over, pleaded guilty to one count of reckless endangerment in a plea deal reached with prosecutors last month. He suffered a gunshot wound to his thigh when the gun he was carrying under his waistband slipped and fired.

Burress hired a prison consultant to help prepare him for life behind bars.

Drafted eighth overall out of Michigan State in 2000, Burress has 7,845 receiving yards over his nine-year NFL career. He caught the winning touchdown pass in the Giants' 17-14 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
