Lakers backup point guard Jordan Farmar told the Canadian Press Tuesday that he eventually wants to have a starting role, but said he doesn’t know if that will happen with the Lakers.

‘I want to run a team and be the lead guard,’ Farmar said in Singapore, where he’s putting together a basketball clinic. ‘Hopefully it can be here [with the Lakers]. There’s a lot of jobs out there. I feel I have a lot to offer.’

In fact, Farmar said that Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak fielded trade offers involving him this off-season, but couldn’t find any that matched his interests. Farmar, who’s entering his fourth year with the Lakers after playing for UCLA, says that ‘since I haven’t got traded, it means they want me here.’

Nonetheless, Farmar averaged 6.4 points and 2.4 assists in 65 regular season games last season and played an average of 18.6 minutes per game -- a drop from 20.6 the previous season. He expects Derek Fisher will start at point guard again this year, but hopes he can increase his role.

Said Farmar: ‘It’s tough for any young player to come into a really good team and find their niche.’
