Arizona left-hander Doug Davis was claimed off waivers, but the claiming team wasn’t the Dodgers, according to a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the matter.

The Dodgers don’t have a reliable fifth starter and remain in search of a pitcher to add to their rotation. Working against the Dodgers, who have the best record in the National League, is that waiver claims are awarded in reverse order of the standings.

The Diamondbacks can keep Davis, trade him to the claiming team within 48 hours of the claim or let him go to the claiming team, which will be stuck with the remainder of his $8.75-million salary.
