Nick Charles, Showtime boxing analyst, fighting cancer

Nick Charles, who first gained some national broadcast fame on CNN and who has been a respected boxing analyst on Showtime, announced he is taking time off to fight stage four urothelial carcinoma.

Charles, who is the ‘ShoBox: The New Generation’ play-by-play boxing announcer, is being treated at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Charles has been on the ShoBox program since its July 2001 debut.

In 1980, Charles became the first CNN sports anchor and spent 17 years at the news network as co-host of the CNN show ‘Sports Tonight,’ mostly along side Fred Hickman.
