As Del Mar’s 37-day meeting enters its sixth week, lots of people will be watching to see if the recent injuries and deaths to horses will continue.

Two exercise riders were injured and one thoroughbred was euthanized Monday in separate incidents, raising the death total to 11 horses at the meet and the seventh during morning workout hours.

Eight horses were euthanized last year and six in 2007, the year the track removed its dirt surface and installed Polytrack.

The deaths have empowered critics of synthetic track surfaces.

Del Mar is preparing for its biggest weekend of the meeting, on Sept. 6, when the Grade I $1-million Pacific Classic is held, along with two other major stakes.
