Floyd Mayweather Jr. talks (and says little)
Why have a conference call if no questions are going to be answered?
Floyd Mayweather Jr. took questions in a call today with reporters and added little to what was already known about him or his scheduled Sept. 19 fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.
What weight will that fight be at? The promoter, the manager and the fighter refused to say.
The bout was originally scheduled to happen Saturday, but then was delayed because Mayweather suffered an injury.
The fighter was able to reveal it was a "rib injury," but when pressed about how it happened, he said, "I'll never tell." Pressed again -- was it hurt by a punch to the side or by hitting the heavy bag? -- Mayweather said, "I don't have to go into depth." A publicist later called here to clarify that such information was too sensitive because it could give Marquez inside information that could help him win the fight.
By saying he got punched in training?
The unbeaten Mayweather had earlier addressed the super-fight that the boxing world would most like to see, a date early next year against the current pound-for-pound "champion" Manny Pacquiao.
"Bob Arum wants [a] 50-50 [purse split], that's why we'll never get that fight," Mayweather said.
If the fight is impossible to make, this is a newsworthy statement, of course, so I gave Mayweather the chance to elaborate on his longtime animosity with Pacquiao promoter Arum. Mayweather split with Arum a few years ago, complaining that the promoter kept him off pay TV and locked him into a bad contract.
"We don't like to negotiate our personal business, but everybody knows [Pacquiao] is not going to get a 50-50 with Floyd Mayweather," Mayweather said.
Of course, the Mayweather-Marquez fight still has tickets available, and Team Pacquiao will be watching closely to see how Mayweather's pay-per-view numbers perform now that he's not fighting as marketable an opponent as either of his last two foes, Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton.
Later, Mayweather's people called The Times to explain that Mayweather would of course negotiate with Arum once Pacquiao is available. Pacquiao is in negotiations for a tentative Nov. 14 fight against Miguel Cotto.

To justify Floyd's claim to get the bigger share of pie, okay let him. He should fight Mosley in December this year then Cotto by May next year, likewise Manny to face Mosley after Cotto. whoever comes out with better results will get the bigger share in 60-40. If in case they both get even then the share will be 50-50. That will also give Mosley, Cotto and Marquez a chance. Finishing their respective opponents by KO will get additional one point. Manny already beaten Marquez by decision so he has already secured one point over Floyd. Likewise Cotto also has one point over Mosley. I think this is a very good idea for them including Mosley, Cotto and Marquez and for the boxing sports in general. The winner will receive a one of a kind belt which can be titled according to fans choice and votes. Imagine five greatest boxers of this generation will vying for the ultimate crown. This would be the first ever in boxing history, what you think?

I cannot really comprehend why they called a conference, when they mostly talk about Pacman. Pacman is not fighting. They should be thrashing each other but no still about Pacman this or that.
It all comes to the point, they want a fight with pacman, as the over all outcome
is a huge payday for either fighter.

pacman has done much greater than RUSTY-floyd done!
pacman vs golden boy (8th rnd stopage!)
gayweather vs golden boy (SPLIT DEC)
pacman vs hitman (2ND RND STOPAGE!)(undefeated at 140)
gayrunner vs hitman (10 rnd stopage!)(1st time in welterwght)
MAYWEATHER "O" HAS GOT TO GO!!

The whole world knows that Mayweather is not interested in fighting Manny Pacquiao because of one reason alone - Floyd is not certain he can win the fight and not because of purse split or any other reason. Floyd is so obsessed about his zero loss record that he ducked guys like Mosley, Cotto, Margarito and others who had chances to beat him. Like this article specified, Floyd talks a lot but says less because people knows his comments has less substance.

i'm so sorry for this 3 musketeers. they just make Pacman more popular. Imagine, Pacman is not fighting and yet they call a conference. And the topic? It's all about Pacman. These are a bunch of losers who can't beat Pcman inside the ring, so they choose another venue, TALK AND TALK. these 3 musketeers may have foot and mouth disease.

Let's hear it again. The most boring match up of the year. Two counter punchers fighting each other. Com'n guys. Don't fool us fans about match. The promoters of this fight are stupid enough not to foresee how this fight will go. The couldn't even promote this fight without dragging Pacquiao into the picture. Mayweather should have wait for one day when he could have Pacquiao. But he opted for a little and less dangerous opponent

They are trying to formulate something in order to get a fight with PacMan.
Thats the main reason for a hush up conference.
Do not be surprised if they come out of something and start giving hints that they are ready to negotiate with Pacman's camp.
They are dying to get a big share of that Paquiao's Pie in these days of PACMAN's great era.

Pacquiao pulverized Oscar De La Hoya and seperated Ricky Hatton from his senses. Mayweather didn't do anything remotely resembling what Manny did.
I'll concede the Marquez fights were close but when you knock a fighter down four times in two fights and three times in one round, who do you think deserves to win? This is not amateur boxing, this is pro boxing where knockdowns mean a lot.
Besides, it was their conference call and they spent most of it avoiding direct questions and zeroing all the time on Pacquiao. Now you know who is important because if Manny wan't, why waste time with him.
But the man who disappoints me the most is De La Hoya. He got whipped and he still talks disparngly about Pacquiao who has never ever said anything negative about Oscar. Now there is a gentleman of the highest order.

DELA Hoya should be added as a new word in the dictionary. This for making statements mocking and belittling the man who made him quit on his stool.
It is a verb, an action word that means to quit or quitter.
To hardcore boxing purists and casual fans its also synonymous to 1) delusional, 2) lier, 3) schemer or 4) coward
The antonyms of dela Hoya are words like, 1) Manny Pacquiao 2) Truthful 3) Credible 4) Integrity 5) Fighter or any such adjectives that represent 1) bravery, 2) humility, 3) kindness 4) trustworthy 5) warrior
Let's start a petition here in and send this one to the dictionary publishers like Webster's and Oxford to update their editions in time for the 2010 edition. We got some real good grounds here. Lets start the ball rolling. The next generations ought to use this word to add to their vocabulary.
Next time you hear someone say, "You are a dela Hoya.", you know what that means. All you do is refer to the dictionary if you don't.
Conversely, when you hear celebrities like Usher say, I will Pacquiao you. You know what that means as he was at ringside when the new word was invented and made known to the speakers of the language like you and me.

Mayweather, Dela hoya and Marquez are obviously envious of Pacquiao. Can't believe what they are doing and saying. They were very much known and great boxers but to think of all their talks, they are all talking of Pacquiao when they even have a fight to promote and to talk about. I'm beginning to lose my respect with these 3 who used to be my favorites..I think Pacquiao is the greatest of them

Manny Pacquiao truly has arrived! He is now the topic of a Floyd Mayweather presscon! Even if the presscon was totally incoherent and sounded like a bunch of psychiatric patients with schizophrenia talking about they're delusions, hallucinations and paranoid ideas, Manny Pacquiao was a distinct topic of interest for these bunch of headcases!

you know why floy maywether jr calls himself pretty boy? because he was never handsome! word "pretty" , is generally referred to pretty women.. so i figured his parents did not know the difference between the word " pretty" and " handsome". he should change his nickname to "handsome floyd" rather thant sissy "pretty boy"

If it's true that Mayweather turned down a 50-50 offer to fight Pacquiao, claiming that he is entitled to more compensation than Pacman, he could very well be dumb. Let me explain: Arum gets 27% as promoter of Pacquiao, so that means Pacquiao will be getting 73%. Mayweather promotes himself so he will be getting 100%. In percentages, that would equate to Mayweather 50% and Pacquiao 37% (the 13.5% going to Arum).
In essence, Mayweather is getting more than what Pacquiao is getting... Get it?
Mayweather is getting blinded by the figure 50-50 which for him sounds like Pacquiao is earning the same as he is, unbenownst to him that he is actualy getting the lion's share of the business!

When you are promoting your fight, you have to focus on your opponent, not on a fighter who is not included in your scheduled fight. It is a disgrace to JuanMa if Floyd is bashing Pacquio and not JuanMa who is his opponent. PBF gave too much attention to a man who is miles away from the teleconference.
ODJH has a grudge against Pacman for beating him on the 8th round. He was forced to stay in his stool just like what he did to Julio Cesar Chavez when the golden boy was in his prime. What comes round goes round.
Floyd is irked that somebody is now acknowledged as the P4P king. He can't simply regain it if he won't settle that score with Pacquio. But money split prevents the fight to happen.
JuanMa has been chasing the Pacman since losing the belt to him.
Which explains why the topic of the Mayweather-Marquez fight is the PACMAN.

Pay-Per-View analysis between PACMAN and MAYWEATHER based from their last two big fights:
Mayweather versus Dela Hoya - people bought because they want to see Mayweather get beaten up
Mayweather versus Hatton - again, people bought because they want to see Mayweather get beaten up
PACMAN versus Dela Hoya - Why buy? Dela Hoya fighting a midget? Are you nuts? (and see what happened)
PACMAN versus Hatton - PACMAN will have an easy win anyway. I'll just watch the replay.

The only thing that makes this fight interesting is they keep on talking about PACQUIAO and not the fight itself...Nothing more nothing less.
Posted by: jchristian | July 15, 2009 at 03:56 AM
Sounds like Mayweather's begging to fight Pacquiao.
Posted by: abtik | July 15, 2009 at 05:40 AM
Lil Floyd and co. want to rub off on their promotional tour the popularity of the Pac.
You can just see the whole topic revolving on the person outside of their supposed fight. That is a sign of recognition of the Pac as greater than the fighters supposed to meet on September 19.

look at these 3 idiots! they lose their senses when pac's name is mentioned.
pacman is their idol!!! lol! how they wish they can be like him!!! a true warrior with superior talent! the cream of the crop!!!
