The challengers to Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra are dwindling

June 27, 2009 | 10:52 am

Two morning scratches today at Belmont Park have left Preakness Stakes winner Rachel Alexandra with just two opponents for the $300,000 Mother Goose Stakes at 1 1/8 miles. With three betting interests, there will be only win betting on the race.

At Hollywood Park, the speedy Forest Melody has been scratched, leaving unbeaten Zenyatta with six opponents in the $300,000 Vanity Handicap, to be run as the fourth race. More scratches are possible. There will be no show wagering in the 1 1/8-mile race.
