Call me a typical American sports fan, somebody who watches soccer on television about once every couple of years when the U.S. team has a big international match.

So there I was glued to the television after I heard the U.S. team was ahead of Brazil, 2-0, Sunday at halftime of their FIFA Confederations Cup championship match.

Then I was stunned to watch Brazil score three goals in the second half to win, 3-2. What happened to the U.S. goalie? He was overwhelmed.

And the ESPN announcers were making excuses at the end about how the U.S. had nothing to be disappointed about because no one had expected the team to win.

Excuse me, but the second-half collapse was not good, and the U.S. blew a chance to gain more fans who simply don’t watch soccer.
