Kings captain Dustin Brown, who’s currently representing the United States in the IIHF World Championships, was named a finalist for the NHL Foundation Award on Monday.

It shouldn’t come as a shocker that Brown is up for an award that recognizes a player’s ‘commitment and service to charities in the community.’ Through his partnership with KaBOOM!, a nonprofit organization that provides children with places to play in their neighborhoods, Brown, 24, donated $50 to the charity for each of his 285 hits this season.

In addition, Brown is a spokesman for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund, and has helped it raise nearly $25,000. He supports the Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. He also helped build a playground at the Bellflower YMCA.

Montreal’s Alexei Kovalev and Columbus’ Rick Nash have also been nominated for the award. The winner will be announced June 18 during the NHL awards show in Las Vegas.
