Long Beach State announced that Jody Wynn, an assistant at USC the last five seasons, has been hired as women’s basketball coach.

Wynn replaces Mary Hegarty, who did not have her contract renewed after an 8-21 season.

The former Jody Anton played at Brea Olinda High and at USC. She started her coaching career in 1996-97 at Pepperdine under Mark Trakh, now the head coach at USC.

‘I am pleased and excited to welcome Jody Wynn to the 49er coaching family,’ Long Beach State Athletic Director Vic Cegles said in a statement. ‘Jody is recognized as an outstanding student of the game, a skilled recruiter and a terrific motivator who understands what it takes to win championships and compete at the highest level. Her commitment to the student-athlete experience and academic excellence is extraordinary. She is an exceptional fit for Long Beach State athletics.’

Wynn said in a statement that she was honored to become Long Beach’s coach.

‘There is an incredible tradition of great teams at Long Beach State and I look forward to building the program back to a championship level. I am excited for the challenges that lie ahead and hope to make the university and the city of Long Beach proud of the women’s basketball program.’
