A year ago, Nashoba’s Key was one of the top female horses in America. Then she died in a freak training accident May 28.

On Thursday, a half brother to Nashoba’s Key, 3-year-old Nashoba Express, is set to make his debut at Santa Anita in the fifth race, a one-mile turf race for maidens.

Nashoba Express is a son of In Excess, owned by Warren B. Williamson and trained by Carla Gaines, the same connections for Nashoba’s Key.

I don’t know if I’d bet on Nashoba Express -- I’ll leave that for the handicappers -- but I’ll be rooting for him and hoping he can show he can run just like his wonderful sibling.
