Golden Boy Promotions executive Richard Schaefer just told me by telephone that his boxer, Shane Mosley, is in a wait-and-see mode after deciding he doesn’t want to pursue a welterweight unification bout against Andre Berto.

‘He only wants mega-fights,’ Schaefer said.

So that means waiting on the outcome of the May 2 super-fight between Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao, waiting to see what happens in a June fight between Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey and waiting to see if Floyd Mayweather Jr. is going to emerge from retirement.

An ESPN.com story this week made it sound like Mayweather is preparing to return, but others close to the boxer have poured water on such talk, and Schaefer says, ‘These are speculations. I’ll believe it when Floyd says, ‘I’m back.’ I haven’t heard that. So it’s not something we’re considering at this time.’

Mosley has said he’d like to fight the winner of Pacquiao-Hatton, but Pacquiao may choose someone else. Hatton is a better option, given that he’s promoted by Golden Boy, but Schaefer said a fight with the Brit later this year in England is one of ‘lots of ifs and maybes around Shane.’

‘At this point, I can’t get Shane a fight against someone who doesn’t want to fight him, so we’ll wait,’ Schaefer said.
