Beijing Olympic decathlon gold medalist Bryan Clay of Glendora can run, jump and throw at world-class levels, but on Friday he’s going to take a walk.

Clay’s foundation is hosting a walk-a-thon with the Hesperia Unified School District, an undertaking that will involve six schools and more than 4,000 kids.

They’ll be walking and jogging in the community during the day to raise money for the foundation, which will return funds to the school by helping support field trips, assemblies, student awards, and sports equipment. Hesperia schools have already raised about $60,000, which is a great start.

Students also will get prizes based on the amount of money they raise. Among the goodies: T-shirts, Wheaties boxes with Clay’s picture on them and a pair of autographed Nike shoes that Clay will give to the lucky winner.

Clay will kick off each event at the various schools, continuing his message of encouraging kids to be physically active and pursue their dreams.

The event will begin at 7:45 a.m. at Mesquite Trails Elementary School and will go from there to Mesa Grande Elementary, Carmel Elementary, Maple Elementary, Heritage, and finally Phelan Elementary School at 1:45 p.m.
