Even though history is against it, Cal State Northridge isn’t making life easy for top-seeded Memphis.

The Matadors benefited from a fast start and Memphis turnovers to trail, 34-31, at halftime in the first round of the NCAA West Regional on Thursday. Tremaine Townsend has nine points and seven rebounds for Northridge and Mark Hill added five points for the Matadors.

Four Memphis starters, including Shawn Taggert, committed two fouls in the first half. Roburt Sallie has 17 points off the bench for the Tigers, who are shooting 37% from the floor.

Northridge jumped out to an 11-4 lead, going 4-for-4 from the line and 3-for-4 from the field.
