It’s one thing to be popular in high school. It’s another to be a highly sought-after football recruit.

Last month, a Birmingham News reporter blogged about landing the 18th phone interview of the day with incoming Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron. At the time, McCarron was considered the 128th-best high school recruit in America by Rivals.com, and 148th by Scout.com.

Clearly a talented kid, McCarron was one of thousands of players trying to make up his mind where to play.

It’s hard to imagine what Bryce Brown must be going through right now. Most fans in the Southland consider Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley the top player in the country. But Brown actually finished ahead of him in rankings published by both of the major recruiting services.

Almost every other senior in America announced his college choice on Wednesday and signed binding paperwork, but Brown still hasn’t formally made his decision. What are the odds that his voice mail is full?

Brown was leaning toward Miami, but CBS College Sports analyst Tom Lemming suggested that USC might be back in the mix. Brown has little company among the undecided elite, however.

Here’s who’s still left from the nation’s top 300 recruits according to Scout.com:

  • No. 45 -- Orson Charles, a five-star tight end from Tampa, Fla. He’s leaning toward a number of schools in the South, but USC is on his short list.
  • No. 78 -- David Oku, a four-star running back from Oklahoma City, Okla. His list doesn’t include any West Coast schools.
  • No. 172 -- Eric Fields, a four-star linebacker from Warner Robins, Ga. Expect him to stay in the South.
  • No. 213 -- Kwame Geathers, a four-star defensive end from Georgetown, S.C. Expect him to remain back East.

Rivals.com also lists four-star recruits Rolando Jefferson (wide receiver from Fresno) and D.J. Hunter (defensive back from Middleton, Ohio) as undecided.
