Shane Mosley's promoter discusses Margarito discipline

February 18, 2009 |  6:00 pm

I spoke to Shane Mosley's promoter, Richard Schaefer, today as he hyped the April 11 fight between world welterweight champion Paul Williams and ex-super-welterweight champ Winky Wright at 160 pounds.

Schaefer was ringside last week when the California State Athletic Commission revoked the licenses of Mosley's Jan. 24 opponent Antonio Margarito and his trainer Javier Capetillo. Margarito was found to have hardened gauze pads inserted in his hand wraps before he stepped into the ring (and lost by ninth-round TKO) against Mosley.

Schaefer said the punishment was serious but justified considering a boxer's hands are "lethal weapons" and the worry that a ruling favoring Margarito would give other rule-bending fighters the opportunity to say they, too, didn't know what was in their glove. Listen to the video.
