Antonio Margarito's trainer takes blame for hand-wrapping scandal

February 10, 2009 |  1:01 pm

Shane Mosley, right, connects with Antonio Margarito.

Antonio Margarito's trainer, Javier Capetillo, has essentially fallen on the sword in the hand-wrapping scandal that is playing out during today's hearing before the California State Athletic Commission in Van Nuys.

Capetillo just told his attorney -- in front of commissioners -- that he accidentally implanted inserts into the hand wraps of his boxer.

"I committed a big mistake," Capetillo said. "I don't want this young man [Margarito] to have problems. I'm here to cover any responsibility. I take full responsibility. I committed this innocent mistake."

Capetillo explained he accidentally pulled the insert from his training bag and placed it in Margarito's knuckle wraps on Jan. 24, just before Margarito's fight with Shane Mosley.

The commission has the power to revoke both Capetillo and Margarito's licenses.

Accidentally? Sure, and Alex was taking steroids because all the pressure. So many misunderstandings.

yeah hasnt it ever happened to you, you have something in your hand and you trip and you know it fell somewhere near but you cant find it thats what happened it just fell in marga cheatos hand wraps lol dude that is lame hope they dont fall for that bs excuse antonio knew about it

Seems that Capetillo will take the fall for Margarito. Unless Margarito is legally blind there is no way he did not knew about it. The evidence is strong enough that can't be denied by Capetillo. Now the lawyer is claiming the evidence did not observed proper chain of custidy. Another indication they knew about the wraps and want to get out on a technicality.

He committed the innocent "mistake" twice because the inserts were in both hand wraps. There is no doubt that he use them in Cotto's fight. The only other time that Cotto had such cuts were when he had head butts, but in the fight he had a broken nose and cuts on his face like the was smack with a bat.

How come they dont show pictures of the wraps, We want to see the evidence. Pictures tell a thousand words.
A costly mistake with consequences,
I do believe illegl hand wraps were also used vs Cotto.
Margo is pretty much done in the boxing world

MARGARITO, is innocent, it was CHOCOMILK, they are confusing it it some plaster stuff, CHOCOMILK gives you Vitamin A,B,C, & D which give you a better punch. you can see it in the face of the guy he fought before mosley.

I don't think Margo is innocent about this anomaly. Anyway, it's a good move by trainer Capetillo that he took all the responsiblity just to salvage his guy Margo. It's better to punish one than both of them. Poor Capetillo is now a "Fall Guy". What a shame. tsk tsk

I hope that they are both banned for life and fined heavily. Margarito knew exactly what was going on. He didn't all of a sudden use the plaster against a 37 year old Mosley and not against Cotto, lets not be ridiculous. He stole Cottos titles and undefeated record, what a scumbag.

The wraps were used before mosley's fight coz there were some blood or stain the wraps. It was used during Cotto's fight. Margo new everything about it.

How about Trinidad? I heard that he always had illegal hand wraps during his prime.
