As Manny Ramirez lingers on the market, and as Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and agent Scott Boras engage in a bitter public stalemate, the possibility increases that another team could swoop in and sign Ramirez to a one-year contract. McCourt says he believes he is negotiating against himself, and in that case perhaps McCourt limits his next offer to one year.

If Ramirez can be signed for one year, however, why wouldn’t another club get involved? Ramirez might deliver the National League West Division title to the Giants or the National League East crown to the Mets, but the club Ron Gardenhire has in mind is the Yankees. Gardenhire, the manager of the Twins, spoke to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

The Yankees sport the highest payroll in the game, after all. They spent more than $400 million on free agents Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, and yet their starting outfield could consist of Johnny Damon, Melky Cabrera and Xavier Nady.

‘I still don’t think they’re done, I really don’t. I think there’s one more guy out there that eventually, someone’s going to say (sign him),’ Gardenhire said, without mentioning free-agent outfielder Manny Ramirez by name.
