I’ve received lots of e-mails today from readers who were touched by the story of Mike Sweeney, the recently signed Seattle Mariners first baseman and designated hitter (and previously, a long-time Kansas City Royal player) who has organized a Saturday fundraiser for victims of the Christmas Eve massacre in Covina that took the lives of nine family members.

One reader from Massachusetts said the story gave ‘wings to my heart,’ and another wrote it was refreshing to hear this type of athlete exists in the climate of Plaxico Burress and others.

I appreciate the emails, but don’t want to short-change another fundraiser for the families of the victims. The University of La Verne is staging an alumni baseball game Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Upland Memorial Park, 1100 E. Foothill Blvd, Upland, 91786.
