TEMPE, Ariz.--There is no shortage of left-handers in camp. Former Angels pitchers Jim Abbott and Mark Langston joined the team for spring-training workouts today, part of Manager Mike Scioscia’s guest-instructor program. Also scheduled for appearances this spring are former Angels Bobby Grich, Tim Salmon and Chuck Finley.

“These guys were terrific pitchers—even more importantly, they’re terrific people,” Scioscia said of Abbott and Langston. “We’re excited to have them here to interact with the pitchers, especially the young pitchers.

“They can pass on some of their experiences, let guys understand them. Sometimes a young pitcher thinks he’s on an island. It’s not the case. These guys understand the team and what it takes to achieve in the major leagues. I think you bring forward the tradition of an organization as much as you can.”

If this all has a Dodgertown kind of ring to it, well, it’s by design. One of Scioscia’s favorite things about spring training during his playing days with the Dodgers were annual visits to Vero Beach, Fla., by players such as Sandy Koufax, Roy Campanella, Johnny Roseboro, Johnny Podres and Carl Erskine.

“These guys were fixtures at Dodgertown,” Scioscia said. “As a player, it’s a great support group for you. I think for us to bring that tradition forward with the Angels—the tradition is there. These guys have a lot to offer, and we’re excited to have them.’
