Because the New York Yankees did not offer arbitration to Bobby Abreu last November, the Angels are not required to relinquish any draft picks for signing the free-agent outfielder to a one-year deal today.

But the addition of Abreu did cost the Angels a promising young pitcher. To make room for Abreu on the 40-man roster, the Angels asked outright waivers on minor league pitcher Nick Green. The right-hander, who was expected to compete for the fifth spot in the Angels’ rotation this spring, was claimed today by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Green, who was in big league camp last spring, went 8-8 with a 5.32 earned run average for the triple-A Salt Lake Bees last season, striking out 112 and walking 44 in 159 innings. Green also allowed 31 home runs, more than any other pitcher in the Angels organization.
