High school seniors cannot sign national letters of intent until Feb. 4, but USC got some good news today when defensive lineman Devon Kennard of Desert Vista High in Arizona announced that he would become a Trojan.

The 6-3, 257-pound Kennard is regarded by some prep sports observers as the nation’s top defensive lineman. His father, Derek, is a former NFL lineman.

Kennard chose USC over California and Texas.

Kennard joins a Trojans recruiting class that already includes quarterback Matt Barkley, who already is attending USC and will participate in spring practice. The Trojans are anxiously awaiting the arrival of signed and faxed letters that will arrive next week from other top players who have made commitments.

Coach Pete Carroll and his staff are making a final pitch for linebacker Manti Te’o of Hawaii, who will make an official visit to the USC campus this weekend.
