A sample of Trojans and Nittany Lions fans had plenty to say about USC’s 31-7 lead at halftime over Penn State in the Rose Bowl.

Bottom line: Fans of both teams agreed that 1. USC’s defense is unstoppable and 2. Penn State is in big trouble.

John Rowe, 52: ‘USC has a strong defense and a strong offense. It looks like it’s going to be a blowout. It’s like we’re playing Stanford. We have the best defense in the nation. They’ll get a play here or there, but they can’t sustain it. Our defense knows how to adjust.’

Enrique Arroyo, 40: ‘On those first three series, it was like, we’re seeing what you got. We’re seeing what you got. It took a lot less time for us to get used to what’s going on as opposed to the past several games. Before, it took one half to get adjusted. After the first three series, we hunkered down and took over on offense and defense.’

Penn State fans

Jim Smith, 27: ‘It’s not really a big surprise. USC has a fast team. They’re the No. 1 defensive team in the country. You don’t expect Penn State to come out and destroy them. Penn State needs to come out (in the second half) right away and score. It’s going to be tough to come back.’

Dave Mills, 25: ‘Penalties are killing us, man. We were able to make a few big plays, but the penalties set us back. USC is fast. They’ve been here a lot of times and we haven’t been here (since 1995). It shows.
