East Los Angeles Olympian Shawn Estrada suffered a right shoulder injury in sparring last week, and will require arthroscopic surgery on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for his promoter announced Monday.

Estrada (2-0 with two first-round knockouts as a pro) was slated to fight Jan. 24 in Minnesota and again on Feb. 6 in Central California. His ring return will now be delayed until April.

The procedure, to repair what is known as a decompression of the subacromial space, will take place at Los Angeles’ Southern California Center for Sports Medicine, and Estrada’s surgeon, Dr. Douglas E. Garland, expects the boxer to resume training 90 days after the procedure, a promoter’s prepared statement said.

‘I’ve been through a lot in my life in a very short period and this is just another one of life’s lessons and obstacles,’ said Estrada, whose father died while he was fighting for the U.S. in Beijing’s Summer Games. ‘I know how to deal with it mentally and physically and because of that I will come back stronger than ever.’
