The latest college basketball polls came out today and, as expected, UCLA continued its gradual but steady midseason descent.

Standing at No. 9 only two weeks ago, the Bruins slipped to No. 17 in the latest Associated Press poll after a weekend loss at Washington. In the ESPN/USA Today poll, they have fallen from No. 7 to No. 16.

The Washington defeat also dropped them into a logjam at second place in the Pacific 10 Conference, tied with Arizona State and California, with the Golden Bears visiting Pauley Pavilion in a key matchup Thursday night.

Asked if it was too early to think about the standings, Coach Ben Howland said: ‘I’m always thinking about that.’ Several players questioned the team’s heart Saturday, but swingman Josh Shipp insisted that no one in the locker room is panicking.

‘It’s still a long season,’ he said. ‘We’re not even halfway through.’
